Frequently Asked
Questions

Got Questions? We’ve Got Answers!

Welcome to our FAQ section, where we’ve rounded up the most common questions we get asked. Whether you’re curious about our services, need help with something specific, or just want to know more, we’ve got you covered!

Can’t find what you need? No worries—just give us a shout, and we’ll be happy to help out!

Can I use AFU funding?

Yep, you can! If you're using AFU funding, we’ve got you covered with an RTP included in your registration package. We submit the RTP when you register to make sure there are no payment delays when camp kicks off. The camp cost will be billed to the AFU account once camp wraps up.
A $250 deposit is required at the time of registration to secure your child’s spot, but don’t worry—this will be refunded once MCFD makes the full payment!

Why do I have to pay a deposit?

We’ve got lots of campers eager to join Summer Social, and your deposit guarantees your child’s spot! By securing their place, you’re all set for a fantastic summer.

Plus, if you’re using Autism Funding, it helps make the payment process nice and smooth—no hiccups along the way!

Do I need to pay a deposit if I am not using AFU Funding?

Nope! We require a deposit only for campers paying with AFU.

For families paying privately, the full cost of camp is due at time of registration.

How many campers are there at one time?

On the first day of Summer Social, each camper will be placed in a group of 3-4 kids, with one awesome ‘pod leader’ guiding the fun!

We have no more than 30 campers at a time, ensuring lots of attention and plenty of adventures for everyone!

Can I send my Behaviour Interventionist to camp?

Yes! We do require any Behavioural Interventionists joining us to attend all staff trainings. Our camp director will work closely with your family’s behaviour consultant to create a customized version of the home behaviour plan that will be a perfect fit for camp. We’re all about making sure everyone has the best experience possible!

How do I know if my child is a good match for this camp?

If your child has had trouble making friends at school, has been bullied, is a bit shy, or struggles with reading social cues and understanding others’ perspectives, then yes, this camp is a great fit! We have many campers attending for the same reasons, and together, we’ll create a supportive and fun environment for everyone!

Does my child need a diagnosis to attend camp?

No! This is no diagnosis requirement to attend Summer Social.  Though many of our campers have a diagnosis, not all of them do.

Do I need to attend Parent Talk Time?

It’s not required, but it’s definitely recommended! Parents and caregivers play a big role in supporting their child’s new skills, and learning the concepts and strategies together makes it easier to reinforce them at home and school. The more you’re involved, the more successful everyone will be!

How is my child matched to a group?

We work hard to match campers based on a variety of factors like age/grade level, cognitive functioning, perspective-taking, language skills, coping strategies, and motivation. The meet-and-greets before camp are super helpful for this! Our directors also spend hands-on time with all the campers on the first day, making any small adjustments to the groups as needed to ensure everyone has the best experience possible!

Is this really therapy?

Yes! Summer Social is both fun and educational! Campers learn valuable skills in a structured, supportive environment. Our amazing staff provide guidance and cues to help campers apply what they’ve learned in different settings and social situations. While camp can be challenging for students who find social situations tough, it’s also a place where they can grow, have fun, and build confidence!

What are the outings?

Outings are a fantastic way for campers to practice their skills in real-world settings! We mix things up, and the outings will be decided closer to the camp start date but we always include one field trip where we all get to hop on a school bus! If you have any concerns or questions about the outings, just shoot us an email—we’re always happy to chat!

Is Summer Social affiliated with anything?

Yes! We’re proudly under the umbrella of the So Social Centre, which offers a bunch of amazing services, including year-round social groups! You can learn more at www.so-social.ca

We’re fortunate to have some wonderful community partners, like the First Christian Reformed Church, where we host our camp. However, we’re not officially affiliated with any other organizations or companies—we just love teaming up to make camp an awesome experience!
